Hemp, with approximately 50,000 declared uses, has been grown in North America since the 17th century. Hemp is grown for a variety of purposes such as fiber production and paper industry, cosmetics, medicinal properties and in the creation of construction material. C. sativa, with hundreds of phytocannabinoids, terpenoids, flavonoids and fatty acids, is recognized as a plant with a rich chemical profile.

For more than 50 years, hemp production was restricted in the United States until the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 directed the USDA to develop a regulatory framework for hemp production. Just in 2020, over 520 licenses were issued in the state of Pennsylvania to establish over 3,100 acres of hemp fields and greenhouses.
