ADHD Traits Impact Financial Decisions

Journal Abstracts
Sep 16, 2025

An August 2025 study published in Nature examined how traits of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) relate to financial decision-making in active online traders. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. While its impact on work and school is well known, less is understood about its influence on financial behavior, particularly in high-risk contexts like online trading.

The study surveyed 945 active traders, mostly male, using validated self-report measures to assess ADHD traits, financial risk tolerance (FRT), trading activity, and portfolio performance. About 5.7% of participants met criteria suggestive of ADHD symptoms, though none were clinically diagnosed.

Results showed that individuals with ADHD traits had higher financial risk tolerance and engaged in more speculative trading. These traits correlated with more frequent trading, higher expectations of returns, and riskier investment choices, but were linked to lower actual portfolio returns. Regression analyses suggested that impulsivity and inattention may contribute to suboptimal decision-making in volatile financial environments.

Although causality cannot be confirmed, the findings highlight the importance of awareness of ADHD traits in financial contexts. Further longitudinal research is recommended to explore these relationships over time.
