Could Collective Consciousness and Coherence Transform the Physical World?

Over 50 years ago, Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell became the sixth person to walk on the surface of the moon. As he traveled back through space toward Earth, Mitchell contemplated the interconnected nature of existence. In 1973 Mitchell established the Institute of Noetic Sciences, or IONS, believing that if scientists could apply the same investigative rigor used to explore outer space to the study of inner space, humanity could discover the undeniable interconnection and oneness with all.

For the past 45 years, IONS has thrived and worked to deepen the understanding of the true nature of reality. As part of its “Awaken the Noetic Now Fundraising Campaign,” IONS hosted a webinar in June 2020, “Cohering a Collective Consciousness,” featuring board chair Claudia Welss with a panel of experts in the field of noetic sciences. Using personal experience and studies, each guest shared how individual consciousness is part of a larger shared field that connects all of humanity. Understanding this truth not only has the potential to impact individuals on a personal level but the ability to affect the health and well-being of the planet.

Coherence is an organizing principle that implies order, harmony, and the efficient use of energy. Researchers have experimented for decades, searching for insight into the great mystery of how all beings are connected to one another as well as to Earth. The conclusion is that humanity’s coherent attention and emotion are intertwined with physical reality outside of the conventional boundaries of space and time. This impacts a collective energetic field environment that connects all beings.

Using actual data collection and mapping, researchers found that when something happens in the world, global consciousness is roused and then a more comprehensive awakening follows. The Global Consciousness Project is an ongoing experiment that began in 1998. Funded by IONS, the project uses a network of hardware random number generators linked to computers at 70 locations around the world. The devices record output of electrical activity once every second. The data is sent to a server in Princeton, and a database of synchronized parallel sequences of random numbers allow scientists to physically measure emotional responses to world events. The experiment explores the possibility that when humans share the same kinds of emotions and thoughts, their collective consciousness affects the physical world.  

Another research system in place to track the impact of human consciousness on Earth is the Global Coherence Monitoring System, used by the HeartMath Institute to research how the Earth’s fields affect human physiological, mental, and emotional processes; health; and behavior. Measuring the magnetic fields of Earth using censor sites around the world equipped with ultra-sensory devices, it was discovered that heart coherence vibrates at the same frequency as Earth, and human heart rhythms can even synchronize with the Earth.

Extensive scientific data supports the theory that humanity lives in a giant biofeedback system with Earth. Each individual has the potential to make a difference on the global field environment by feeding the field with love, compassion, and kindness, rather than with anger and hatred. The evolution of conscientiousness can greatly impact global consciousness.

Fostering the discovery of ways to intentionally inspire a shared field of awareness with greater possibilities for collective survival during this time of worldwide dynamic tension is essential for understanding consciousness. The interconnected nature of reality allows access to deeper levels of healing, transformation, and innovation.

The panel of experts at IONS’s webinar concluded that everything is interconnected, and if humanity embodies and embraces that interconnectivity, it is possible to transform Earth and life on the planet while assuring well-being for all.
