Art Therapy Helps Young Cancer Patients Cope

Journal Abstracts
Mar 17, 2026

A recent study published in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies examined how art therapy can support the mental health of children and adolescents undergoing cancer treatment. Cancer and its treatments often lead to psychological challenges for young patients, including anxiety, depression, and stress. Art therapy—a form of psychotherapy that uses creative activities like drawing, painting, or sculpting—has been explored as a non-drug approach to help manage these emotional difficulties.

The researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis, using data from eight studies involving more than 450 patients across five countries. These studies included both randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental designs. The analysis revealed that art therapy significantly improved symptoms of anxiety and depression among young cancer patients. Additionally, narrative findings suggested benefits in reducing overall psychological distress, including stress and anger.
