Bergamot and Grapefruit Oils for PMS and Period Pain
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and menstrual symptoms affect up to 95% of women of reproductive age and can significantly impact quality of life. While aromatherapy is a popular complementary approach, the specific effects of bergamot and grapefruit essential oils on these symptoms was the focus of a new study. This randomized controlled trial—published in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies—involved 90 women with PMS who were assigned to inhale either bergamot, grapefruit, or a placebo essential oil for 30 minutes, three times daily over four days during the second half of the menstrual cycle after ovulation and before the start of the menstrual period, repeated across three menstrual cycles. Researchers measured changes in PMS and menstrual symptoms using standardized assessment tools before and after the intervention.
The findings showed that both bergamot and grapefruit essential oils effectively reduced overall PMS symptom severity, including mood-related symptoms like depressive affect and irritability, as well as physical symptoms such as pain and appetite changes. Grapefruit oil had broader effects, also improving specific menstrual symptoms such as menstrual pain and coping ability during menstruation. In contrast, bergamot oil showed no measurable effect on menstrual symptoms beyond the premenstrual phase.
These findings suggest that while both oils may be beneficial for managing PMS, grapefruit essential oil may offer added support for menstrual discomfort.
