How Lifestyle Shapes Eye Health

A 2024 study published in the journal AJO International explored how everyday habits like screen use, physical activity, diet, sleep, and stress levels influence the development of myopia, also known as nearsightedness. By combining a systematic review of past research with new data, the study offers a detailed picture of how lifestyle and genetics together affect eye health.

The findings show that certain behaviors, such as spending long hours on digital devices, being inactive, eating poorly, and experiencing high levels of stress, are linked to a greater risk of developing myopia. These effects are even more pronounced in people with a family history of the condition. However, the study also found that making healthier choices, especially spending more time outdoors, can help prevent or slow the progression of myopia.

In addition to these well-known factors, the researchers identified new potential risks. Exposure to smoke and ongoing psychological stress may contribute to the onset of myopia. There is also emerging evidence that poor gut health, influenced by diet and environmental conditions, may play a role.

Overall, the study highlights the importance of daily lifestyle choices in protecting vision. While genetic factors cannot be changed, adopting healthier habits may lower the risk of myopia. The authors suggest that public health efforts should focus on encouraging outdoor activity, limiting screen time, promoting balanced nutrition, and supporting mental well-being to help reduce rising rates of this condition.
