China Leads in Integration of Traditional Medicine

News Briefs
Aug 18, 2025

At the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 78th World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva in May 2025, representatives from China, Malaysia, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, and the Seychelles co-hosted a landmark event focusing on traditional medicine. This gathering marked the first time that WHO member states organized a dedicated session on traditional medicine during the WHA. Over 100 participants convened to discuss integrating traditional medicine into national healthcare systems to support universal health coverage and sustainable development goals. The collaborative event highlighted the importance of international partnerships in advancing traditional medicine globally. Countries shared experiences, challenges, and successful integration strategies, creating opportunities for mutual learning and support

China's Leadership in Integration

Yu Yanhong, commissioner of China's National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), delivered a keynote speech at the WHA outlining China's comprehensive approach to integrating Western medicine with TCM, one of China's key healthcare strengths. She highlighted the 2016 legislation that formalized TCM's role in the national medical system, ensuring its regulated development. In China, TCM institutions handle approximately 1.69 billion outpatient visits annually, with TCM departments present in over 90% of general hospitals across the country.

Framework and Regulation

China has developed robust regulatory mechanisms to support TCM development while ensuring regulated, safe practices. The 2016 law provides a blueprint for countries seeking to formalize traditional medicine within their healthcare frameworks.

China’s regulatory approach balances innovation with safety, allowing TCM practitioners to embrace modern medical technologies while maintaining core traditional principles and fostering continued development.

Healthcare Infrastructure

China's commitment to TCM extends beyond policy into concrete infrastructure development. TCM hospitals now operate in nearly all provinces, cities, and counties across the country. Most general hospitals include dedicated TCM departments, creating seamless integration between traditional and modern medical approaches. The large number of annual TCM visits reflect both patient preference and clinical effectiveness in addressing various health conditions.

Innovation and Modernization

The TCM industry actively embraces modern medical technologies to enhance traditional theories and practices. This innovation includes developing new treatment protocols, improving diagnostic techniques, and creating evidence-based approaches to traditional remedies.

China has also formulated comprehensive strategies for TCM management, health services delivery, and practitioner training. These strategies ensure consistent quality standards while preserving traditional knowledge and techniques.
