Pets Need Healthy Immune Systems Too

Article Abstracts
May 14, 2024

Nutrition is essential for the overall gastrointestinal health of dogs and cats. Studies show that up to 70% of a pet’s immune system is contained in the digestive system. Feeding a pet nutrient-rich food— and, if necessary, supplements—helps maintain a healthy microbial environment in their digestive tract.

Animal owners should be mindful of their pet’s potential digestive issues, taking time to evaluate their eating and elimination habits. There are several indicators that pet owners can watch for to make sure their animal is healthy. A dog’s stool should be soft and well-formed. Fecal consistency is a prime marker of digestive health in dogs.

Nervous behavior or discomfort after a meal, excessive flatulence, a change in the pet’s coat quality, increased itching, and excessive stomach rumbling could indicate there may be a problem that warrants a trip to the veterinarian.

Other tips to maintain digestive health in pets is to not give them human food, help them avoid extreme stress, make sure garbage cans are covered, and keep an eye on what the animal gets into. Taking precautions to protect pets at home while providing food with ingredients selected for ease of digestion supports their overall digestive and immune health.

Some pet food companies have created special blends with fiber, prebiotics and probiotics that strengthen the immune system to help optimize the microbiome and support digestion.
