EWG Certified For Your Health

A product must avoid any ingredients of concern (those on EWG's Unacceptable List"). Products must also disclose all ingredients (including those used in "fragrance"), and must maintain appropriate manufacturing practices.

Purpose

The Environmental Working Group’s mission is to empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment. With breakthrough research and education, we drive consumer choice and civic action.

Applied Standards

All products "must score a "green" in EWG's Skin Deep® database", " cannot contain any ingredients on EWG's 'Unacceptable' list", "cannot contain ingredients on EWG's 'Restricted' list", "must follow standard ingredient naming guidelines", "must fully disclose all ingredients on the label, including ingredients used in fragrance", "must develop and follow current good manufacturing practices", "must follow the European Union's requirements for labeling fragrance allergens", "must follow the European Union's labeling guidelines for nanomaterials used in cosmetics", and "must indicate an expiration date or a 'period of time after opening'".

Prohibited nonsynthetic substances

See EWG's unacceptable list and restricted list attached. Ingredients normally score "red" in the Skin Deep database or are banned in other countries.

Qualifications/Disclosures

The EWG will not license products such as medical/semi medical products, products that tend to be caustic or harsh (such as hair straighteners), product categories of health concern (eyelash glue, nail glue), beach and sport sunscreens, and aerosols (due to repository concerns).

Other notes

(In order to be profiled in Skin Deep®, and in turn to be EWG VERIFIED™, a cosmetic company must make products available to consumers in the United States. That requirement may be met in one of three ways: (1) have products sold in retail stores located in the U.S.; (2) sell to U.S. consumers directly through the company’s own website; and/or (3) establish a storefront
