Don’t Underestimate the Brain-Gut Connection

Article Abstracts
Feb 09, 2026

There is a strong connection between our brain and our gut via the vagus nerve. It is not uncommon to experience anxiety and depression when the intestinal flora is out of balance. Healthy gut bacteria are imperative for the creation of important neurotransmitters, namely serotonin and cholecystokinin. These neurotransmitters regulate mood and emotions.

According to Dr Sara Frawley, naturopathic physician and founder of Ground Force Supplements LLC, the gut lining can be improved by introducing probiotics and fiber into the diet and eliminating junk food that contains inflammatory chemicals. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBS), and depression can be treated with omega-3 fatty acids, folic acid, zinc, magnesium, vitamin A, B6, B12, K and D supplements.

Melatonin, a powerful antioxidant and sleep regulator, has also been proven to relieve symptoms of IBS. Melatonin improves sleep, anxiety, and depression. Treating and healing the gut lining and maintaining a balance between “good” and “bad” gut bacteria is central for treating mental health disorders.
