Relaxation Key to Relieving Labor Pain

Article Abstracts
Nov 26, 2025

More and more moms are choosing natural childbirth over drugs. An important way to control pain during labor is by relaxation, which increases endorphins, the body’s natural pain relievers, and helps slow down the stressful pain messages going to the brain. Relaxation will also help labor progress. Three key ways to relax during labor are soaking in warm water; a form of stroking/massage called effleurage; and traditional massage with oils.

Many studies have shown the efficacy of warm-water bathing during labor. Not only is it soothing, but being in water relieves the force of gravity. Rhythmic stroking, or effleurage, of the abdomen, back, thighs, and forehead is also useful for reducing stress and promoting relaxation. Another method of relaxing and relieving tired muscles is massage with essential oils. Massaging the lower back with a tennis ball has been reported to promote relief of lower back pain. Oils such as lavender, chamomile, sweet geranium, jasmine, rosewood, and mandarin increase endorphins and reduce pain sensation.
