Summer is here and more of us are going outdoors to play and relax. Sadly, this also means we are increasingly exposed to situations which can harm us. Sprains and strains, sunburn, insect bites and dehydration are just a few of the challenges that can confront us as we take to the great outdoors. Luckily, there are strategies to help mitigate the more dire consequences of our bucolic adventures.

Prevention First

“Weekend warriors” are famous for both their enthusiasm and the seriousness of injuries that can occur. Be realistic about your fitness levels and ability to participate in physical activity. Wear sunscreen, at least SPF 15, and limit the time spent sunbathing to 30 minutes. Use insect repellent if you visit a place famous for flying, stinging critters. Keep hydrated. Dehydration, heat exhaustion and even heat stroke can sneak up on you and it can be serious or even deadly. Make sure you also consider the amount of humidity in the air and its impact on your breathing. Pay attention to local recommendations for the amount of water required for each individual appropriate to the activity you will undertake.

Homeopathic Remedies

If you do get into trouble, consider treating minor problems with homeopathic remedies. They are safe, effective, and inexpensive. Have a homeopathic first aid book as resource and a kit with common remedies that cover acute conditions. One book that you might want to consider is Everybody’s Guide to Homeopathic Medicine by Stephen Cummings and Dana Ullman.

Have a great summer and be safe.
