Mindfulness Training Improves DASH Diet Adherence

A 2023 study by researchers from Brown University, Columbia University, and Harvard University explored whether mindfulness training could help people better stick to the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, a well-known eating plan for lowering blood pressure. While the DASH diet is effective, many people find it hard to follow consistently over time. The researchers wanted to see if becoming more aware of the body’s internal signals—such as hunger, fullness, and cravings—could make healthy eating feel more natural and sustainable.

The study followed 201 adults with elevated blood pressure over six months. Participants were randomly assigned to either a mindfulness-based blood pressure program or to usual care with extra educational support. The mindfulness program taught participants to pay closer attention to bodily cues, stress responses, and everyday habits that influence blood pressure, including food choices.

By the end of the study, people in the mindfulness program were significantly better at noticing and understanding their body’s signals compared to those in the control group. Importantly, participants who had struggled most with healthy eating at the start showed meaningful improvements in how closely they followed the DASH diet. They ate more fruits, vegetables, and whole foods, and made choices more aligned with DASH guidelines.

The findings suggest that mindfulness training may be a helpful companion to the DASH diet, especially for people who find it difficult to maintain dietary changes. The authors argue that learning to tune in to the body may support healthier eating habits and, over time, better blood pressure control.
